STREET POETRY

Denis Postle

In the 50s the UK was a great place for creative education especially via the chain of local art schools that were then outside the later ennervating grip of academic status.

This creative formation grew in me, an outsider to the very gentrified world of art, a deep suspicion of it as elitist and exclusive. I came to see (too much of) 'art' as a product of an industry of consumption and spectacle where painting and sculpture had become a branch of banking - capital asset management - that together suppressed and devalued participation and making.

However if we keep our eyes open, there are people outside the citadels of high culture who meet us with heart and wit and even on occasion, wisdom, where we are often to be found, the street. I came to see this as Street Poetry and I invite you to taste and perhaps contribute to my collection of instances of it.
